Whiskey in the Jar
As I was going over the far Kilkenny mountain,
I met with captain Farrel and his money he was counting,
I first produced my pistol and I then produced my rapier,
Saying stand and deliver for I am the bold deceiver.
Chorus:
Mush a ringum doorum doo doorum da
Whack fol the derry-o
Whack fol the derry-o
There's whiskey in the jar.
I counted out his money and it made a pretty penny
I put it in me pocket and I took it home to Jenny
She sighed and she swore that she never would deceive me
But the devil take the women for they never can be easy.
I went into my chamber all for to take a slumber
I dreamed of gold and jewels and for sure it was no wonder
Jenny drew my pistols and she filled them up with water
Then called far Captain Farrel to be ready for the slaughter
It was early in the morning just before I rose to travel
Up comes a band of footmen and likewise captain Farrel
I first produced my pistol for she'd stolen away me rapier
But I couldn't shoot the water so a prisoner I was taken.
They put me into prison without a judge or writing
For robbing Colonel Farrel on the far Kilkenny Mountain
But they didn't take my fists so I knocked the sentry down
And bid a fond farewell to the jail in Sligo town.
If anyone can aid me it's me brother in the army
If I can find his station in Cork or in Killarney
If he will come with me we’ll go roaming in Kilkenny
I'm sure he'll treat me better then me old missporting Jenny.
Now there's some that take delight in the carriages a-rolling
And other take delight in the hurley and the bowling
But I take delight in the juice of the barley
And courting pretty fair maids in the morning bright and early.
